Enda Kenny will remain as leader of the Fine Gael party.
A meeting of the TDs, Senators and MEPs of the parliamentary party has opted to keep him at the helm.
A secret ballot of the parliamentary party has found the majority of them have confidence in him as party leader.
It follows a challenge to the leadership of Enda Kenny by Richard Bruton.
It was something of a long and drawn out process with the meeting getting underway at around 11.30am this morning with Deputy Kenny and his challenger Richard Bruton setting out their stalls.
Afterwards it was the turn of the parliamentary party members to have their say.
Albeit that process being interrupted twice for two Dail votes.
Voting got underway at 4pm.
Just before 4:40pm there was confirmation that Enda Kenny had won the day and remains leader of Fine Gael.
However, the weighing of votes will never be known as the secret ballots have already been shredded.
Fine Gael party chairman Paraic McCormack believes the party can recover from the events of the past few days.
“Our job now is to get down and ensure that Fine Gael gets back to where we were” he said.
“It has been a tough week for us, damaging to the party; but we can recover from that and I’ve no doubt we will recover from that as we have recovered from many lower points before” he added.
Enda Kenny will appoint a new frontbench team on Monday.
