Eurozone reaches deal on Greece

Feb 11th, 2010, 1:22 pm

A deal has been done to help Greece deal with its debt crisis.

The agreement was made in talks between the EU President – Herman Van Rompuy -  ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet and several heads of State.

Van Rompuy told reporters an agreement had been reached and it will be communicated to the other leaders.

They say they fully support the Greek government’s efforts to stabilise its economy – and effectively reduce its deficit by 4% in 2010.

The debt crisis there and in Spain and Portugal has led to a slide in confidence in the single currency.

However, reports suggest Greece has not asked for any direct financial assistance.

EU President Herman Van Rompuy says a “co-ordinated action” will be taken and they’ll seek guidance from the International Monetary Fund.

“It will propose immediate additional measures, drawing on the expertise of the International Monetary Fund” he said.

“The first assessment will be done in March”.

“Euro area member states will take determined and coordinated action if needed, to safeguard financial stability in the Euro area as a whole” he added.

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen is among those attending the summit.
