The Garda Commissioner says the force is following “significant and definite lines of inquiry” into the latest murder in Limerick.
A bread delivery man was shot dead at a petrol station in the city at6:30am this morning.
He’s been named locally as 35 year old Daniel Treacy, a father of two.
A 29-year-old man’s been arrested as part of the investigation.
Earlier, the Mayor of Limerick Kevin Kiely told Lunchtime with Eamon Keane here on Newstalk that internment should be introduced to deal with gang crime, as current government measures weren’t working.
The Taoiseach says he’ll be advised by the Garda Commissioner on the issue.
However, Commissioner Fachtna Murphy insists that all resources are being utilised.
“Well I can very much understand where the Mayor is coming from, when an atrocious crime like this happens” he said.
“But for me I have to keep my people focused and that’s what we’re doing”.
“We’ve previously deployed the Emergency Response Unit and now the Regional Support Unit, which can be armed in certain situations – very much deployed down there”.
“Certainly from the Garda perspective, we’re doing all in our power” he added.
