Feb 18th, 2010, 10:31 am

The National Parents’ Council Post-Primary says it’s very concerned about the finding’s of a report, which shows that half of the Country’s maths teachers are not qualified to teach the subject.

The report shows that 48 percent of secondary school maths teachers don’t have a proper qualification, and most of them have degrees in science or business studies.

The report concluded that the lack of qualified teachers is a key reason for the poor performance of Irish teenagers in the subject,

Spokesperson says the National Parents’ Council Post-Primary Rose Tully says it’s worrying, given that maths is key in several careers.

“Maths are so encompassed in everyday living that it is important that young people get the skills that they need for survival out there in the world” she said.

“A lot of people would say ‘we don’t use geometry, we don’t use trigonometry and we don’t use all of those things’ in everyday life”.

“Depending on the career you go into, you actually will use an awful lot of those things in everyday life” she added.
