Irish swimmer sets new record at Championships

Aug 13th, 2010, 9:59 am

Irish swimmer Grainne Murphy is back in the pool this morning at the European Swimming Championships.

The 17-year-old from New Ross in Co. Wexford caused a sensation yesterday narrowly missing out on a medal in the final of the women’s 800 metre freestyle event.

She set a new Irish record in the process.

Her coach Ronald Clees says she did fantastically well considering her competition.

“Field-wise the people that were in there  – you had 3 Olympic gold medalists, you had 2 world record holders, you had a world champion, and you had 2 world champion finalists in there” he said.

“So I think coming 4th is absolutely fantastic” he added.
