Ivor Callely resigns from Fianna Fail, wants to clear name

Aug 25th, 2010, 10:16 am

A senior member of Fianna Fail says the decision by Senator Ivor Callely to resign from the party is the right one.

The move came after the committee investigating expenses claims of Senator Callely refused a request from his lawyers to adjourn proceedings.

He remains a senator on a salary of over €70,000 and says he intends to clear his name.

Gerry Beades of the Fianna Fail National Executive says it was time for Senator Callely to go.

“The public are sick of Ivor, of the Ivor story and Ivor’s difficulties – which are all of his own making” he said.

“Really there’s far more important issues – the pain and suffering (of) people…affected out there at the moment by the economy, etc – than Ivor Callely”.

“We just need to move on and the only way is for Ivor to go, and that’s what happened” he added.
