Man at centre of Sargent letter speaks out

Feb 24th, 2010, 9:47 am

The man at the centre of the Trevor Sargent resignation controversy says the now former Junior Minister is the “most honourable” politician in politics today.

Dominic Mc Gowan, from Ballbriggan in North County Dublin, says he believes there was no interference in the course of justice.

And he says he believes there no “deviousness” behind the letter, which Trevor Sargent wrote to the garda involved in the case.

“Basically I only went to my local politicians, Mr. Sargent was good enough to contact the guards to say ‘Well, why hasn’t my witnesses been interviewed’, and that’s it” he said.

“There was no deviousness in the letter writing, maybe it shouldn’t have went to the particular guard himself – maybe it should have gone to the superintendent”.

“But as Mr. Sargent stated, he wasn’t trying to get the particular guard in trouble” he added.
