Celebrities have been queuing up to help earthquake victims, in high profile efforts being followed online.
Haitian native, musician Wyclef Jean has joined the relief effort on the ground, with regular cyber updates, while others like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Alyssa Milano, Shakira and Chris Martin are all encouraging people to donate.
The American Red Cross says donations have poured in to help Haiti much quicker than for their appeals following Hurricane Katrina and the Asian tsunami.
That’s partly been helped by the ease with which people can make donations, thanks to newer forms of technology.
Jacqui Goddard of the Daily Mail is monitoring the effort from Miami, she says it’s proving hugely successful.
“Just by texting a single word, or a single code, on their cell phones and that results in them donating $5 or $10 – which is deducted from their mobile telephone bill” she said.
“It’s easier than filling in a form online or going on a telephone to make a call”.
“Already the American Red Cross has raised 5 million that way already, and 35 million in total” she added.
