A teachers union in the north is calling for schoolbags to be searched in an attempt to cut the number of schoolchildren abusing alcohol.

A total of 360 pupils were suspended during a five-year period because of drink, according to figures released by the north’s Education Minister.

However, no figures were available on whether the pupils involved were under the influence of alcohol on their school premises.
