Offspring of cloned cow entered UK food chain, says watchdog

Aug 4th, 2010, 10:10 am

It has been confirmed that meat from the offspring of a cloned cow has been sold and eaten in Britain.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) there says it happened last year.

But it has also said that it intervened only last week to stop the same thing happening again.

It is illegal for the meat or milk of a cloned animal or its  offspring to enter the human food chain in the UK without approval.

But FSA chief executive Tim Smith says it is perfectly fine to eat.

“We’ve no concerns about the safety of meat that comes form the healthy offspring of cloned animals” he said.

“Whilst it’s regrettable that the farmer concerned didn’t actually tell us about this cow going into the food chain….I think the public should have no concerns about the food safety” he added.
