The Dublin parents of a disabled 8-year-old girl are suing two doctors for damages over anti-depressants prescribed during her mother’s pregnancy.
40-year-old Lisa Glynn McGillin from Gainsborough Avenue, Malahide, claims she was not properly warned of the possible side-effects of the drugs she was taking.
Both doctors deny liability.
The court heard from 1994 Lisa Glynn McGillin was prescribed a number of drugs to treat a mild-bipolar disorder.
On becoming pregnant in July 2000, the now 40 year old mother of two was told to discontinue taking lithium but to continue with epilim and prothiaden.
Scans prior to the birth showed abnormalities and on April 10th 2001, baby Rebecca was born at the Rotunda Hospital handicapped and disabled.
Her parents are now suing psychiatrist at the Mater Professor Patricia Casey and obstetrician Mary Holohan claiming they were negligent in failing to stop the mother taking high dosages of drugs during pregnancy.
The case is due to last around 4 weeks.
