There is more criticism today for a new database of property prices.
The Justice Minister announced yesterday that the Property Services Regulatory Authority will be tasked with collating and publishing house price data.
Dermot Ahern says it is going to improve transparency and quickly detect market trends.
But some see it as the first step towards a property tax.
But Brian Keegan of the Chartered Accountants of Ireland says it does not make sense.
“The information on house prices and house trends is already in government possession; so it’s hard to see – at least in tax terms – where this new database will fit in” he said.
“It’s redundant in terms of…value-based property tax, and this is also duplicating information that government already possesses” he added.
