The National Roads Authority says its possible that roads may have to be closed next week if conditions worsen and salt supplies run out.
The NRA says its only been able to source less than half the amount of salt and grit needed to keep the roads safe next week.
A spokesman for the roads authority says the country is now in ‘dire straits’ when it comes to getting access the to material needed to clear the roads of snow and ice.
Sean O’Neill says salt supplies are running critically low.
“We’re in a tough position – we’re looking right now guaranteed we’re looking at about 7,000 tonnes for next week, basically if Monday and Tuesday works out OK” he said.
“After that we’re still a bit iffy”.
“Now we go through about 20,000 tonnes a week, and we have been for the last few weeks – so we’re in dire straits” he added.
