RSA defends its action on icy roads

Jan 6th, 2010, 11:20 am

The Road Safety Authority’s defending it’s position in ensuring road safety during the cold snap.

There’s been much criticism about road gritting over the past week, with many main and secondary roads still untouched and as a result are extremely dangerous.

But the RSA says it’s done all it can within it’s remit to ensure people are aware of the dangers of driving in these conditions.

Spokesperson for the RSA Brian Farrell says the gritting of roads is not it’s responsibility.

“One of the problems is with the Road Safety Authority everyone thinks we are responsible for everything related to road safety – and unfortunately that is not the case” he said.

“Certainly the Road Safety Authority has been monitoring the situation very carefully; but as I said…unfortunately it’s just not our area of responsibility” he added.
