Taoiseach reacts to Limerick murder

Feb 22nd, 2010, 4:33 pm

The Taoiseach has described the murder of a man in Limerick today as “appalling”.

35 year old Daniel Treacy, a father of two, was shot dead while making a bread delivery to a petrol station on the Ennis Road in Limerick early this morning.

A 29 year old man’s been arrested and is being questioned at the city’s Mayorstone Garda Station.

The killing has lead the Mayor of Limerick to call for internment to be introduced to deal with gang criminals.

Mayor Kevin Kiely told Lunchtime with Eamon Keane that current government measures to deal with gangs are not working and selective internment should be introduced.

But Brian Cowen says he takes his advice on such matters from the Garda Commissioner.

“I very much regret the fact that another appalling murder has taken place” he said.

“I’ve spoken to the Garda Commissioner, we take advice from the Garda Commissioner on these matters – he’s proceeding with the investigation”.

“They have lines of inquiry and they’re pursuing them” he added.
