Trial opens of UK man accused of Dublin murder

Feb 9th, 2010, 4:33 pm

The trial of a British man accused of fatally stabbing a mother of one has heard she was found by paramedics lying in a pool of blood in a flat in Dublin.

44 year old Clive Butcher, with an address at Ranelagh Road, has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Rebecca Hoban on December 17th 2008 – but denies her murder.

Opening the trial today, the prosecution told the jury there would be evidence 28 year old Rebecca Hoban was stabbed 6 times in her back, neck and shoulders at a flat on Ranelagh Road.

The court heard she had gotten into difficulties including drugs and had been knocking around with Clive Butcher for about a year.

A 999 call from the accused in which he admits the stabbing was played to the jury.

When paramedics arrived they found the mother of one lying on her back in a pool of blood with no signs of life.

Just inside the door of the flat on a small side table was a kitchen knife.

Clive Butcher admits the killing but denies murder.
