Worldwide recall of hip replacement device

Aug 27th, 2010, 12:24 pm

Patients here who have had a hip replacement may have to undergo surgery again to replace a faulty device.

It is reported the device made by DePuy Orthopaedics has been deemed faulty and the HSE is asking hospitals here to remove it from stock.

Reports say DePuy which is a division of Johnson and Johnson is recalling hip parts implanted in about 93,000 people worldwide because of a high rate of repeat surgeries needed due to loosening parts, infections, dislocation and sensitivity to metal and pain.

The company says patients do not necessarily have to have it removed but it is advising them to visit their surgeons for an evaluation and its recommending yearly monitoring.

Consultants here are to undertake a risk assessment of patients to see how many people are affected here and to determine if they will need surgery.
