SF’s Gerry Adams elected to Dáil

Feb 26th, 2011, 7:04 pm

The first 25 seats of the 31st Dáil have been filled.

So far Fine Gael has 8, Labour 9, there are 5 Independents 1 Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil have 2.

Gerry Adams of Sinn Fein has been elected in Louth on the first count whilst Brian Lenihan of Fianna Fail has been elected without reaching the quota in Dublin-West.

The Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny says it is an “historic day” for his party.

Eamon Gilmore says he is not surprised at the big story of the General Election that of the meltdown for Fianna Fáil.

It could see the party struggle to secure more than 20 seats.

In the capital Brian Lenihan may be the only TD for the party.

And dynasties like Haughey, Hanafin, Andrews and even Coughlan may come to an end.

The big success is just how blue Enda Kenny has turned the country.

His party will probably end up with more than 70 seats.

He is not ruling out a single party government just yet saying he wants to wait and see the final breakdown of seats.

The day will probably see Sinn Féin treble their seats in the 31st Dáil.

Meanwhile Independents have also had a good day with Shane Ross in Dublin-South and Mick Wallace in Wexford topping the polls in their constituencies and Joe Higgins has also made a return to the Dáil.
