Do Girl Guides really make cookies? What was Camping like in the 1940’s?
“100 Years of Guiding” tells the story of the Irish Girl Guides as it celebrates its centenary.
The first company as formed in Harold’s Cross, Dublin in 1911 and today the Irish Girl Guides has over 10,000 members across the country. It is part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) which has over 10 million members in 145 countries.
‘100 Years of Guiding’ will be composed of member’s personal stories of guiding experiences through the decades with a focus on the middle part of the century. It will illustrate the Ireland that these women grew up in and the adventures they had in Guiding, the role it played in their lives and how it gave them opportunities to learn skills not usually associated with girls.
There will be stories of what they did in their companies and units and camping stories, trips abroad – this will illustrate the skills they learned and how Guiding helped their personal development.
The programme will also cover the visit to Ireland of the Chief Guide, Lady Olave Baden Powell, Wartime guiding, and how a member of the Irish Girl Guides became the chairperson of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
100 Years of Guiding is on Newstalk this Saturday morning at 7am-8am and is repeated on Sunday night from 9pm.
