The Arthur Guinness Fund is an innovative investment program which honors the philanthropic legacy of Arthur Guinness by supporting the vision and the enterprising spirit of social entrepreneurs in Ireland. It is established as part of the Guinness 250th celebration. So far €1.65 million of funding as well as professional business support has been provided to 20 Irish social entrepreneurs. For those interested in applying can download an application form fromwww.guinness.com/arthurguinnessfund

On Global Village we will be highlighting weekly the work of the social entrepreneurs of The Arthur Guinness Fund.

This week we’re delighted to welcome:

· John Evoy from Irish Men’s Sheds, an organisation of support groups based on the motto that “men don’t talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder”. This was a model that John originally heard about in Australia and decided to set up at home. The website was initially set up as a forum of support for men facing problems from unemployment to illness and depression, but there are now 40 sheds running around Ireland. These sheds facilitate the sharing of problems and skills as the men work onold cars, bikes, lawn mowers etc. Find out more on the website: www.menssheds.ie

Interview to Camila Batmanghelidjh

This week we were delighted to talk to Camila Batmanghelidjh, the founder and director from Kids Company. Camila was trained as a psychotherapist and set up Kids Company 13 years ago to promote and support emotional wellbeing of vulnerable children. Camila points out that mental health in children is often overlooked as people think “children are possessions of their parents” and few people consider that some children are being harmed by their parents. She told us that a shocking 1.5 million children in the UK are maltreated every year. Through Kids Company, Camila  aims to provide a “substitute, additional, parenting opportunity for kids whose parents aren’t functioning”. With a background in psychotherapy, Camila is acutely aware that there is evidence that maltreatment has a significant scarring impact on the emotional centres of the brain and can have long lasting effect into adulthood. The good news is that the provision of care, through organisations such as Kids’ Company, will lead to these children being better able to manage their trauma. Find out more on the website: http://www.kidsco.org.uk/
