Travel affected as high winds batter Ireland

Jan 3rd, 2012, 9:35 am

Over 15,000 homes are without power after storms battered the country overnight.

Flights and ferries have also been hit as winds reached up to 160 kilometres per hour in some parts of the country.

The ESB says the North-West counties of Donegal and Sligo were worst hit overnight with around 9,000 homes without power there this morning.

After hours of storm force gales some of which reached up to 160 kilometres per hour thousands of customers also faced blackouts in the Midlands, South-East and South-West.

ESB says crews have been out working on the problem since early morning.

On the roads drivers are warned to be extra careful this morning with fallen debris coupled with strong winds and driving rain meaning road conditions around much of the country could be dangerous.

Two Irish Ferry crossings between Dublin to Holyhead have been cancelled while flights also face delays this morning as a result of high winds.

Irish Ferries have cancelled the 8:45am and 2:30pm Dublin to Holyhead Swift crossings.

There are also a number of flight cancellations and delays as a result of high winds at many airports.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines before travelling.

Brian Montayne is with the ESB.

He told Breakfast here on Newstalk that they are working to fix all faults.
