Feb 22nd, 2012, 1:59 pm

Loyalist leader Mark Haddock has been cleared of the murder of paramilitary rival Tommy English 12 years ago.

The 40-year-old was shot in his house in Newtownabbey in Co. Antrim in front of his wife and children.

It happened on Halloween night in 2000.

The trial at Belfast Crown Court was one of the longest in the legal history of Northern Ireland.

It is also set to be one of the most expensive.

13 men had faced more than 30 charges.

During the trial two brothers – Robert and David Stewart – gave evidence against the defendants.

In return the two former UVF got a reduced sentence for their part in the killing.
