There is some good news for the capital as 800 new jobs are being created.
The posts will come on stream at digital television provider Sky.
The company is setting up a new customer contact centre at the Burlington Plaza in Dublin in August.
Director of Sky Ireland is Mark Deering.
He says recruitment is starting right away.
“Having our advisers based in Ireland will ensure that we’re more Irish-centric in our customer service, and improve customer satisfaction” he said.
“We’ve chosen a city centre location in the heart of Dublin; and these jobs will be coming on-stream – we’ll be opening the customer service centre – in August of this year”.
“The 800 jobs will be at full compliment within 2 years” he added.
The Tánaiste says he is confident that Irish people will vote on the issue rather than the popularity of the government if a referendum has to be held on the new EU Fiscal Treaty.
The pact was agreed last night in Brussels.
The Attorney-General will now determine whether there is a legal requirement to hold a referendum here or not.
Opposition parties say Irish people should have their say.
But Eamon Gilmore says it is a clear-cut situation.
“The agreement either complies with the Irish Constitution or it doesn’t – and the Attorney-General in the first instance has to give her view on that” he said.
“If it complies with the Constitution, then there’s no requirement for a referendum; and if it doesn’t and there has to be a change made to the Irish Constitution, then there will be a referendum” he added.
The differences between men and women are being highlighted in a new study by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
It covers a wide range of topics including health, education, employment and crime.
One of the most interesting results of this study is that women are more likely to be hospitalised than men.
It shows that men are more likely than women to be treated for schizophrenia and alcohol problems but women suffer more with conditions like depression.
In terms of income the report shows wages of women in 2009 stood at around 73 %of men’s.
But in general men work longer hours – on average 39.4 hours a week last year – compared to women’s 30.6 hours.
Unsurprisingly unemployment rates for both sexes rose in recent years.
But it was a sharper spike for men from about 5 %some years ago to 17.5 %last year when female unemployment stood at 10.4 percent.
The proportion of those at risk of poverty is similar with 15 %of men and 14 %of women.
The study also shows that most murder victims here are male.
While the vast majority of the prison population is male too.
Adrian Redmond is a senior statistician with the CSO.
“Boys leave school earlier than girls – there’s a much higher rate of early school leaving” he said.
“Then we see it in the girls performance at secondary level, then it goes right through of course – as one might expect – to third level”.
“Where…significantly more female graduates are now coming out of universities than males” he added.
Gardaí investigating the murder of a woman whose body was found in a suitcase at the weekend say they are particularly anxious to talk to a man who was known to the victim.
The body of the 26-year-Malawian woman was found on Sunday morning at Blackhorse Avenue.
A house in the Aughrim Street in Stoneybatter has also been sealed off by investigating Gardaí.
They say they are now following a definite line of inquiry in this investigation.
