Opposition hit out at State asset proposals

Feb 22nd, 2012, 3:41 pm

Opposition parties are hitting out at the government proposals on the sale of some State assets.

Fianna Fail is again insisting the decision is solely the policy of the coalition as the previous government did not sign up to such a move.

Sinn Fein is accusing Fine Gael and Labour of “flogging off the State’s wealth for a quick buck”.

It is accusing the coalition of hiding behind the Troika after deciding to sell off up to €3 billion worth of State assets.

The government is to sell off the non-transmission part of Bord Gáis, non-strategic power stations and the remaining stake in Aer Lingus.

€1 billion of the sale-price can be used by the coalition for re-investment into the economy.

The party leader in the Dail – Gerry Adams – believes the move will result in job losses and increased prices for consumers.

While the party spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform Mary-Lou McDonald says the coalition has taken a short-term view.
