France may hold referendum on new EU Treaty

Feb 14th, 2012, 5:09 pm

France may hold a referendum on the new EU Fiscal Treaty.

It has emerged this evening that the French Prime Minister François Fillon believes a referendum will be necessary so that a “golden rule” for closer budget scrutiny by Europe can be written into the French Constitution.

A senior member of his party said after a meeting that “François Fillon considers it necessary to hold a referendum on writing a golden rule for the budget into the constitution”.

Jerome Chartier made the comments on Twitter.

There is still no indication on whether a referendum will be held here in Ireland on the new fiscal compact.

The Taoiseach has told the Dail this evening that the government was still awaiting the advice of the Attorney-General.
