Struck-off solicitor faces new charges of stealing €50 million

Struck-off solicitor Thomas Byrne has appeared in court on new charges of stealing €50 million in mortgages relating to the sale of around 20 properties in Dublin.

Dublin District Court heard the 45-year-old who lives in Aungier Street in Dublin is facing trial on indictment.

Mr. Byrne used to practice as a solicitor in Walkinstown until he was struck off in 2007.

Already accused on two counts of theft he came before the court today in a pinstripe suit to face 50 fresh charges.

Sargeant Paschal Walsh gave evidence that he made no comment when the charges were put to him before the court this morning.

It is alleged that between 2004 and 2007 Thomas Byrne made false deeds in relation to around 20 residential properties in south Dublin mainly around Crumlin and Clondalkin.

He is accused of using the deeds and stealing in total around €52 million.

Financial institutions affected include NIB, INBS, EBS, Bank of Scotland and IIB.

He remains on bail and has been granted legal aid.
