Top 5 at 5 – Last crew member of Tit Bonhomme recovered

No 1 – The body of the last crewman from the stricken trawler the Tit Bonhomme has been removed from the sea and brought to Cork University Hospital.

The body of Said Ali Eldin was brought ashore to Union Hall to a temporary mortuary where his father visited and had some time with his son’s remains.

Around 60 members of the Egyptian community, along with locals, gathered at the quayside and prayers were said.

John Draper, spokesperson with Valentia Coast Guard, says the search operation has now been stood down.

No 2 – Gardai have named a 24 year old man – who was shot dead in Co. Donegal yesterday as Andrew Allen.

The Derry native was shot dead in the bedroom of a house – in Links View Park in Buncrana last night, after moving to the area – around six months ago.

His partner was also in the house at the time – but she was not injured in the attack.

Technical examinations are continuing at the scene – and a post mortem will be carried out on the victim’s remains later.

Speaking at a press conference attended by Highland Radio, Superintendent Kevin English refused to be drawn – on reports that those behind the killing – have links with a group known as ‘Republican Action Against Drugs.’

No 3 – A 20 year old Dublin woman has avoided jail after falsely claiming to gardai that she’d been raped by a taxi driver, near her home.

Carol Leonard of Briarfield Road, Kilbarrack received a suspended 3 year sentence for making a false statement at Raheny Garda Station in September 2010.



No 4 – A high-ranking Greek official has resigned in protest over a proposed bailout deal for the country.

The Deputy Foreign Minister objects to some tough terms in the austerity deal.

She’s the fourth cabinet member to resign over the EU demands.


No 5 – The President of the European Union has accused Syria of committing “outrageous” atrocities against its citizens in a brutal crackdown on opponents of President Bashar al-Assad.

Herman Van Rompuy’s statements came as Syrian tanks stormed a district in the flashpoint city of Homs.

Aid agencies say it’s now proving difficult and dangerous to provide help to Syria.

A spokesman for the Red Crescent organisation in the country says their workers are risking their lives to bring medicine and supplies to people in places like Homs.
