US closes Syrian embassy, removes staff – reports

Feb 6th, 2012, 2:29 pm

It is being reported that the US has closed its embassy in Syria.

It is understood that the 17 employees including the US Ambassador to Syria have left the country.

The US has notified Syrian authorities of the decision.

Poland will reportedly now protect US interests in the country.

The US State Department had warned last month it would close the embassy unless the government there stepped up its protection.

It cited concerns about the safety of personnel and recent car bombs.

The U.N. says the crackdown by President Bashar al-Assad has killed more than 5,400 people since March.
