Young people from Finglas feature in a Newstalk 106–108 fm documentary about how they feel growing up in their community. Finglas in West Dublin is a community everyone has heard of – often for the wrong reasons – in news headlines as the location of a gangland killing or Garda swoop on organised crime. Yet the vast majority of people from Finglas have no involvement in any of these events.
Whats the Story?looks at this other Finglas – the one that doesn’t make the headlines – while also examining the dynamics that see the actions of a few define how a whole community is portrayed. “It’s not our story” said local priest Father Seamus Aherne who was interviewed for the programme, “it’s the story of some people – and I want our story told.”
Radio producer Derek O’ Halloran has teamed up with a group of local young people to investigate how people in Finglas feel about their own community and how it’s presented in the media. What they find is a strong sense of pride and a network of locals working on the ground to make Finglas a dynamic and vibrant community.
Yet the groups investigation also reminds the listener of the terrible events that have repeatedly catapulted Finglas into the national headlines revealing the deep discomfort local people feel at the crimes that happen in their midst.
Whats the Story? is a refreshingly different account of life in Finglas that puts the voices of young people at the centre of the narrative presenting an important and often overlooked perspective on the local community.
Whats The Story? aired on Saturday February 4th 2012 from 7am-8am and was repeated on Sunday February 5th 2012 at 9am-10am.
