74 dead in Egyptian riots

Feb 2nd, 2012, 2:16 pm
At least 74 people are dead after riots in the city of Port Said on Wednesday.

Three days of national mourning have been declared following the incident, in which fans invaded the pitch after a match between two top-tier football clubs.

In Egypt, suspicions are growing that darker political forces were at play, rather than a straightforward case of football hooliganism.  Egyptian activists have accused the police and military of failing to intervene to stop the mayhem while the Muslim Brotherhood is blaming supporters of the former leader, Hosni Mubarak for inciting the violence.

To talk about this Jonathan was joined on air by Egyptian blogger in Cairo, Hossam el-Hamalawy.  Listen to the interview here.

Lunchtime with Damien Kiberd and Jonathan Healy, Monday to Friday 12.00 – 13.30
