Universities, Rural schools and the Vatican Embassy

Feb 2nd, 2012, 2:53 pm

On today’s Lunchtime, the Minister for Education and Skills joined Jonathan on air to discuss a number of issues surrounding education.

The latest ITs to join forces in their application for University status this week were Cork Institute of Technology, Limerick Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology, Tralee. They want to create Munster Technological University, but the presidents of the seven current universities have been raising concerns about what this could mean for the quality of third level education in Ireland.

Meanwhile, a protest against the potential closure of rural schools and cuts in teacher numbers took place outside the Dáil last night, attended by hundreds of teachers, students and community activists.

Jonathan spoke to Ruairí Quinn about these issues but first he asked about the future of the Vatican Embassy, as there were reports that the Government was about to review the decision to close it – you can listen to the interview here.

Lunchtime with Damien Kiberd and Jonathan Healy, Monday to Friday 12.00 – 13.30
