A man in his 70s has died after trying to rescue girls who got into difficulty swimming in Cardigan Bay, off the Welsh coast.

Police said the man was attempting to help another man who had gone to the aid of the teenagers in the sea in the resort town of Tywyn.

He was pulled unconscious from the water by a lifeboat crew on Saturday afternoon before being airlifted to hospital, where he later died.

The other rescuer and the teenagers were safely recovered from the water at around 4.15pm on Saturday, police said. The girls have been taken to hospital as a precaution.

Tributes for the man, who has not been named by police, poured in from well-wishers on Facebook page Love Tywyn.

One called the victim a "true hero" describing the attempted rescue as "a true act of bravery" and an "amazing act of kindness to save two other lives".

Another described him as "very special".

Less than an hour earlier, in a separate incident about 35 miles north of Tywyn, a 16-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl got into trouble in the water off Harlech Castle.

They were rescued by coastguards and police.

North Wales Police has issued a warning to the public to take extra care in the sea as warm and sunny weather draws crowds to the coast.
