A protest outside the Department of Foreign Affairs has heard calls on the Minister Charlie Flanagan to expel the Israeli ambassador over the Gaza conflict.

It follows further bloodshed in Gaza today where an Israeli air strike killed four people who were attending a funeral.

Meanwhile Hamas has continued its rocket attacks on Israel.

Earlier, six people were reported dead in a separate air strike in Gaza. Three of them were allegedly senior figures in militant group Hamas.

The men have been named as Mohammed Abu Shammala, Raed al-Attar and Mohammed Barhoum.

They were killed along with three others at a house in the southern town of Rafah, Hamas said.

Violence has resumed in Gaza following the collapses of peace talks between Israel and Hamas earlier this week. An Israeli military spokeswoman said aircraft had carried out 20 assaults in Gaza, but gave no further details.

Israel reportedly unsuccessfully targeted Hamas's top military commander, Mohammed Deif, on Tuesday. Hamas has said his wife and seven-month-old son were killed in the airstrike.

Palestinian officials say more than 2,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in the fighting.

Israel says it has killed hundreds of Palestinian militants in the conflict, which the United Nations says has displaced about 425,000 people.

64 Israeli soldiers and three civilians in Israel have been killed.

Egyptian-mediated talks to end weeks of fierce fighting involving Israel, Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza collapsed on Tuesday when violence broke out after 10 days of relative calm.

Israel says the latest airstrikes are in response to a resumption of Hamas rocket fire on Tuesday - it says that only one rocket launch was registered since midnight, compared to more than 210 over the previous 30 hours.

In a nationally TV address on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showed little willingness to return to the negotiating table with Hamas.

"We are determined to continue the campaign with all means and as is needed," he said.

"We will not stop until we guarantee full security and quiet for the residents of the south and all citizens of Israel."
