Amnesty votes to adopt policy supporting decriminalisation of consensual sex work

Amnesty International has voted to adopt a policy supporting the decriminalisation of prostitution.

At their International Council Meeting in Dublin earlier, delegates voted to establish a policy aimed at protecting the human rights of sex workers.

They also recommended that they support the full decriminalization of all aspects of consensual sex work.

They say that they recognise that it is a complex issue, but add that it is also a critical human rights issue internationally.

Salil Shetty, Secretary General of Amnesty International, said, "we recognize that this critical human rights issue is hugely complex and that is why we have addressed this issue from the perspective of international human rights standards. We also consulted with our global movement to take on board different views from around the world".

The organisation said the policy has been drawn by their own research and sources including a number of UN agencies. Amnesty says the new policy will 'ensure that sex workers enjoy full and equal legal protection from exploitation, trafficking and violence'.

Sex Workers Alliance Ireland (SWAI) said in a statement that they are 'delighted' with the passing of the resolution.
