The Irish Independent journalist who exposed tapes of conversations between top executives at Anglo Irish Bank says there's more detail to come.

The paper's revealed discussions between senior managers John Bowe and Peter Fitzgerald inside Anglo in 2008 that show one executive knew the cost of bailing out the bank would be much higher than the government was told.

At the time, Mr. Bowe was in talks with the Central Bank and in the recordings, released by Independent.ie, he speaks about requesting a €7-billion bailout for Anglo from the government, even though negotiators knew it would not be enough. The eventual cost was €30-billion.

Special correspondent for the Irish Independent Paul Williams, who reported the story, told Newstalk's Lunchtime presenter Jonathan Healy, the newspaper has more tapes and will publish further details later this week:

Independent TD Shane Ross says the tapes show an urgent need for a banking inquiry:

In this clip, from the first set of tapes, we hear Mr. Bowe respond to Mr. Fitzgerald's questions about how the figure of €7-billion was arrived at, and how the strategy was to play for time:

Listen here as they talk about how, once the Central Bank was invested, it would have to support its money, whereas if they saw the enormity upfront they might say they had a choice:

Here the colleagues admit Anglo is not an attractive sell, ask each other what they think might happen:

In a statement to the Irish Independent, John Bowe has denied that he was a "participant in misleading the Central Bank".

While Peter Fitzgerald told the paper he wasn't aware of "any strategy or intention on the part of Anglo Irish Bank to mislead the authorities".

Political Editor of The Irish Independent Fionnan Sheahan analysed the tapes with Breakfast here on Newstalk.
