UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has praised the result of the same-sex marriage referendum as an example of Ireland's commitment to human rights.

The head of the United Nations has been honoured in Tipperary this evening with the International Peace Award.

Ban Ki-Moon is recognised across the globe for his efforts in combating conflict and human rights abuses. He highlighted Ireland's efforts in his acceptance speech:

Mr Ban is in Ireland on an official visit, and will meet with President Michael D Higgins tomorrow.

Tomorrow Ban will meet the Minister for Defence Simon Coveney during a visit to the United Nations Training School at the Curragh Barracks in Co Kildare.

The UN Secretary General will then travel to Dublin, where he will meet with President Michael D Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin.

A meeting with the Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald and members of the Syrian Community will then take place in Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park.

Ban will then meet with Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan at Dublin Castle, before he delivers the key note address at the Iveagh House Lecture, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations and the 60th anniversary of Ireland's membership of the UN.

On Tuesday the final day of his visit, Ban Ki-Moon will meet with Taoiseach Enda Kenny before attending an Interactive Youth Event in Iveagh House and the launch of Ireland's UN Youth Delegate Programme with the National Youth Council of Ireland.
