Portlaise town is located in one of Ireland’s midland counties, Laois.
The county town, once known as Maryborough until 1929, was named by Queen Mary in 1557. The Queen’s name and home county, or “borough” of the town land was given in her honour.
It remained Maryborough until 1929 after the foundation of the Irish Free State and became Portlaoighise, later to be simplified to Portlaoise.
