The purists and pragmatists have been arguing about the merits of Jose Mourinho's opportunistic and ultra-defensive approach against Liverpool yesterday.

But at the end of the day, the result went to Chelsea and the stats bear out the ultra-conservative nature of their "two buses" approach as Brendan Rodgers put it after the game.

Squawka's Action Area map show almost one quarter of Chelsea's play taking place in their own box. Taken together with the area directly in front of their penalty area, the Blues spent just shy of 40 per cent of the match camped in that defensive zone.

Keeping the ball has never been part of the Mourinho doctrine and that was especially true yesterday as his side completed just 67 per cent of their passes.

They also completed just 147 of their passes which looks positively minuscule compared to Liverpool's 530.

This following Squawka graphic shows how Liverpool struggled to penetrate the Chelsea area...

The Chelsea back four was noticeably narrow with right full back Cesar Azpilicueta getting in on the box action 20.55 per cent of the match, while 25 per cent of Ashley Cole's actions were located in his own box. He was especially narrow, with just 8 per cent of his action in the left-back zone.
