Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, and two others have landed safely in Kazakhstan.

Spaceman Hadfield, 53, and his crew have been extracted from the Soyuz spacecraft, after they landed in the desert at about 3.30am.

The landing brought their 5 month mission in space to a close.

Hadfield has since changed his Twitter settings to read "Canadian Astronaut, back on Earth after living in space aboard ISS as Commander of Expedition 35." And his location - '...a field in Kazakhstan'.

Before landing, his son Evan was tweeting on the Commander's behalf.

Commander Hadfield yesterday signed off with a brilliant take on David Bowie's 'Space Oddity', filmed entirely in the International Space Station.

Hadfield made the film over his long weeks and months in space, while floating around in zero gravity.

The 5 minute video - posted on YouTube - was produced with the help of staff at the Canadian Space Agency:

Before leaving, the Commander carried out some final checks, and bid his international colleagues goodbye:

Chris Hadfield's gained a huge following on Twitter posting stunning pictures of our planet from space, most recently he wrote about an ammonia leak the ISS was experiencing.
