Irish film and TV star Cillian Murphy has joined the fight against fur farming in Ireland by urging Simon Coveney TD to outlaw fur farms entirely, PETA has confirmed.

Murphy wrote a letter to the Agriculture, Food and the Marine Minister on behalf of PETA, pushing to ban the practice that he says is “a shameful, inhumane industry that is simply not compatible with animal welfare.”

The letter requested that Ireland join the list of countries that have already officially banned the practice, including the United Kingdom, Austria and Switzerland.

However, Minister Coveney has maintained his stance that although fur farming does not agree with his personal beliefs, the five operating mink farms in Ireland will not be outlawed.

Cillian Murphy’s letter also refers to the short, gruesome lives of minks in captivity and that a “complete ban is the only way to end the misery endured by thousands of animals every year on fur farms”.

Mr Coveney is also facing pressure from the public, with recent protests by the National Animal Rights Association against fur farming taking place last weekend.

Murphy is a longtime vegetarian and has voiced his opinions on unethical agribusiness practices in the past. He has most recently been seen as a main cast member on the BBC historical drama series Peaky Blinders.
