There have been protests in Athens, to mark the sixth anniversary of the death of an unarmed teenager shot by police.

The killing of Alexandros Grigoropoulos in 2008 triggered weeks of rioting in Greece.

Today's demonstrations saw police respond with tear gas after petrol bombs and rocks were reportedly thrown by protesters. It is also reported that a number of shops were set on fire.

Police in Greece have said around 100 people were arrested.

The clashes followed a march in Athens by up to 6,000 people to commemorate the anniversary.

Today's march followed a series of demonstrations in recent days in support of a friend of Grigoropoulos - a jailed anarchist and convicted bank robber.

25-year-old Nikos Romanos has been on hunger strike since the 10th of November, demanding that he be allowed attend university.

"I won't back down. My response is: struggle until victory or struggle until death," Romanos has said, according to Reuters.

Romanos is currently hospitalised and under police guard.
