The Defence Minister Simon Coveney says the participation of Ireland in the United Nations mission to the Golan Heights is "likely" to be maintained.

Speaking to troops from the 46th Infantry Group at Custume Barracks in Athlone, Mr Coveney said the government never takes the decision to send Irish soldiers abroad "lightly".

His comments come amid a review into the Irish deployment in the volatile region between Israel and Syria.

Mr Coveney says the UN must continue to monitor and evaluate the safety of the mission to ensure the safety of peacekeepers and observers.

He says the next deployment of 130 Defence Forces personnel to the region will be delayed by two week as UN forces redeploy to alternative bases for safety concerns.

But Mr Coveney says he is 'confident' Ireland will stay committed to the mission.

While Lt Marie Carrigy from Longford says she and her comrades are prepared for the challenges ahead.
