Cristiano Ronaldo has finally wrestled the Ballon d'Or away from Lionel Messi.

The Real Madrid and Portugal star has been recognized for an outstanding year for club and country after topping the poll of national coaches, captains and selected journalists.

Messi was short-listed for the honour, which he was looking to win for the fifth year in a row, along with Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery.

All three players were also included in the FIFA Team of the Year, which featured four players from Barcelona, three from Bayern Munich and two apiece from Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain.

After being overlooking for the individual honour, Zlatan Ibrahimovic also picked-up the Puskás Award for the goal of the year prize after his audacious overhead kick against England.

Brazilian legend Pele was a awarded an honourary Ballon d'Or, while the World Coach of the Year went to Jupp Heynckes, who led Bayern Munich to their first treble.

The Women's World Coach of the Year was Germany's Silvia Neid while her goalkeeper Nadine Angerer won the Women's Player of the Year prize.

There was also a FIFA Fair Play award for the Afghanistan Football Federation, which has won praise for helping to promote the sport in the war-torn country.
