The DUP politician who caused offence with his ‘curry my yoghurt’ comments that appeared to mock the Irish language has again insisted he will not be apologising, and said anyone who is gravely offended by his words ‘needs a humour bypass’.

Speaking to RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta today, Campbell said he didn’t understand why what he said was so offensive, saying he was not opposing those who use the language, “but those who abuse the language.”

Campbell compared the Belfast assembly to ones in Scotland and Wales, where politicians, who might speak their own national languages, only use English in Westminster.

Grewgory Campbell, MP and member of the Northern Irish Assembly, sparked a controversy when, addressing the Assembly speaker during a debate on minority languages, he said: “Curry my yoghurt can coca colayer,” which appeared to be a mock version of “Go raibh maith agat, Ceann Comhairle,” which Sinn Féin MLAs would use when addressing the speaker.

Campbell doubled down on his stance last weekend at a DUP conference. He produced a tub of yoghurt and told delegates: "So I got some yoghurt today and I'm looking forward to lunch, because they tell me there's some curry there."

Earlier this week, the PSNI warned Mr Campbell there is a threat against his life.
