David Cameron has warned that Western countries will take economic sanctions against Russia to a "whole new level" if there is another surge of violence in Ukraine.

He used Cold War-style rhetoric - warning that Western nations should be ready for a prolonged struggle with Putin's Russia.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, the British leader said that economics should be used as a weapon to counter Russian aggression:

"If Russia is going to rip up the rule book of the 21st century and destabilise a sovereign country, then the rest of the world should be prepared to say to Russia, 'Well you can't rip up one part of the international rule book while still having access to international markets, international finance, international systems.'"

Moscow has denied that its forces have been involved in fighting in Ukraine.

In the WSJ interview Mr Cameron also said that he thinks that "the right answer" for the UK is to remain part of a reformed EU - but he acknowledged that he could oversee the process of Britain withdrawing from the Union.
