The Department of Public Expenditure and Reform have stated it is "disappointed" with the High Court ruling that they should cover all costs in the Garda Representative Association sick pay case.
The High Court's decision comes despite the fact that the GRA lost its case last week in relation to public service paid sick leave entitlements.
The Garda Representative Association believes its members should not fall under the regulations because their job can be so dangerous.
However, it is understood that the Department are now liable to cover the bill because of its late foreclosure of documents pertaining to the case.
The total costs of both sides, which are understood to be substantial, could now be paid by the taxpayer.
A representative from the Department has told Newstalk: “The Department is disappointed at the decision of the High Court today in relation to the award of costs, particularly in light of the comprehensive decision last week on the substantive issue.
"We will now consider the judgement with our legal team and assess the options available to us.’’
