A 66 year old man has appeared in court charged with endangering lives and damaging the front wooden gates of Trinity College Dublin in an alleged ramming incident.

John Farrell of Fassaugh Avenue in Cabra is accused of causing over 61 thousand euro worth of damage on April 2nd last.

He appeared in court charged with causing nearly 44 thousand euro worth of criminal damage to the front gates of Trinity College.

The solid oak gates from the 1870s had to be replaced after a car crashed them on April 2nd last.

Farrell, who is unemployed, is facing trial on 21 charges including hit and run offences, endangerment and dangerous driving at College Green and Dawson Street

He's also accused of causing nearly 18 thousand euro worth of criminal damage to cars and a hi-ace van.

Garda Anthony Brazil gave evidence the 66 made no reply to the charges at Pearse Street Garda Station this afternoon.

He's been remanded on bail to appear in court again on November 26th.
