Some 25 elderly residents of social-housing in Dublin's North Inner City will be back in their homes before Christmas.

It follows a dispute between the housing charity Catholic Housing Aid Society (CHAS) and Dublin City Council over how much rent the tenants should pay, with the council saying the charity was demanding too much money.

Father Scully House on Grenville Street has been redeveloped - with €17m in State funding - and now comprises 99 apartments.

The tenants moved out in 2006 to allow for the demolition of their homes.

Spokesman for CHAS, Steve Rawson says they won't face a rent hike when they move back in, and there will be no deposit required.

“Former residents can also be assured that there will be no deposit and they will pay the standard social housing rent that they have been used to,” Rawson said.

“We will now be making immediate contact with these former residents to accelerate the necessary arrangements for their transfer into the new complex,” he added.
