A new report shows Irish employers regularly come across lies on the CVs of applicants.

Recruitment company CPL has released its Employment Market Monitor today - it shows 65% of the employers they questioned reported that many candidates claim to hold certain qualifications on their CVs that they don't hold at all.

Bosses gave examples of people who had lied about the level of responsibility a candidate claimed to hold in previous roles, and about academic achievements.

The survey's authors also heard about instances where family members sat interviews for their brothers or sisters.

Peter Cosgrove Director of CPL spoke to Newstalk's Pat Kenny show:

CPL is warning lying in this way can have serious implications for your career.

First impressions count

Employers also told CPL that a candidate can lose a job in the first five minutes of an interview.

According to the firm, certain points come up time and again "It is important that candidates look professional, be on time and be polite to reception as often this may be seen as a key part of progressing further with the hiring manager."

Women can't negotiate

The survey also found that 40% of employers say women will settle for less money than men for the same job.

34% of HR managers in the IT sector say women undersell themselves, but there is also evidence to suggest women are not strong negotiators.
