An F-16 fighter jet and a small plane have collided midair in South Carolina, raining debris on to the ground.

Emergency crews are at the scene, about 11 miles (17km) north of Charleston.

The F-16 was attached to the 20th Fighter Wing, Shaw Air Force Base said in a post on its official Twitter account.

Lieutenant Jenny Hyden said the pilot was taken to the base for observation. She did not elaborate on his condition.

The military jet collided with a Cessna C150 at about 11am local time, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement

It was not immediately clear how many people were on board the smaller aircraft or if any of them survived.

Officials also have not said if anyone on the ground was injured.

Shaw AFB and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said they were investigating the crash.
